European Franchise Consulting Group – Franchising in Europe

Franchising as an organisation form and as a strategy for international growth is taking on greater significance as it becomes more familiar and established in Europe. It is also being used increasingly as the method for opening up new markets, for example in eastern Europe.

In striking contrast to many other sectors in Europe, Franchising has been experiencing continuous year-on-year growth. In Germany there are now over 800 established franchise organisations with more than 45.000 sub-franchises. In 2004 the German franchising sector generated total revenues of EUR 25 billion and employed more than 406.000 people. This is a 4% rise compared to 2003.

In contrast, in the UK the number of active business format franchises now exceeds 700. The total number of franchised sub-units is estimated at 28,500. Total annual turnover of the business format franchise sector in the UK amounted to GBP 9.1 billion (approx. EUR 13,6 billion) in 2004. The UK franchise sector grew by about 3% in 2004.

International expansion through franchising enables companies to implement growth strategies that might not otherwise be feasible. However, cross-border development in any form is a complex undertaking and must be carefully planned and resourced. In addition to conducting market research and adapting the existing system to suit the local market a further factor which is crucial for for success is recruiting the right franchisees – and this is were we can also help.

“Think global - act local” is our competence in Europe. We will support you in the development and implementation of your international growth strategy without losing sight of the local requirements.
